Knockemstiff is a set of rough-hewn, loosely connected stories which take place in the very hard edged, cruel little town of Knockemstiff, Ohio. This was author Donald Ray Pollock's first published book. His new novel focuses on the same mean little world of some terribly real people. This is a place of casual evil and unnecessary suffering where God's hand of mercy is mostly cloaked, almost never to be seen at all. The best we can get is an avenging angel who delivers a sliver of justice, but I don't want to reveal too much.This book is an excellent (& quick) read, but it will stay with you far longer then you may want.
