Without Michael Mann and some of his greatest achievements (Thief, Manhunter & the Miami Vice series), Drive would have never existed. It borrows pretty shamelessly from him in this film, however, what you get is a taunt and pulse-pounding action movie with love story elements (or maybe it's a love story with action movie in it's blood). Regardless, go smoke and be riveted.
Thank you to Nicolas Winding Refn for continuing to make challenging films and Ryan Gosling's really great (looking) performance. By the way, love the jacket.
Just like the very good Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas, Johnny Depp will once again portray another version of Gonzo journalist Hunter S. Thompson in the upcoming film The Rum Diaries. I don't fault him for wanting to run around playing another thinly veiled version of Hunter S. It looks like a fun time, but it would be great to see someone else get a shot at interpreting the doctor's many gonzo ways.
The news about this upcoming movie made me wax nostalgic for the first attempt to make a movie of HST's antics in Where the Buffalo Roam. Starring Bill Murray in his most understated of roles (possible because he didn't want to risk Thompson's legendary ire if he fucked it up). Murray does a nice job nailing down his famous muttering, gestures and mayhem causing ways with his journalistic bouts of clarity. The film is a bit lumbering at times, but is ultimately saved by Peter Boyle stealing many of the scenes as Thompson's lunatic lawyer Carl Lazlo.
I highly recommend watching both the Depp and Murray films as a reasonable guide as you pack up your illicit supplies & firearms for your very own bender road trip. Imitation is the highest form or flattery even if none of us could ever do it as well as Hunter.
Having cleaned out my ears and put some cold compresses on my head from last evening, it is time to see more music at FYF Fesitival in downtown Los Angeles. More of everything please!
You can only stay in your house, shut in watching movies, for so long. Last night it was Kylesa at The Troubadour. Thanks to David from reminding me that some metal in your diet is good for the soul and also for the brownie which should have had a warning on the label.
I originally wanted to do a monthly get together with some good friends, good weed, good food and a great movie. I was excited to play projectionist at home & turning people on to some amazing films. So what happened? It all started to sound like a hassle. All those people at my place. My dope all smoked up. It was so perfect in my mind, it was bound to get ruined. But the name was too good to let go of, so I thought, why not a blog? Welcome to Marijuana Movie Night.
