Is old timey horror & dread better? Maybe this is the best way to scare ourselves for entertainment while the world burns. Or do we look back at stories in supposedly simpler times so we can understand the terrifying NOW better? It’s October so I’m pontificating in anticipation of the upcoming All Hallows Eve.
I missed Robert Eggers’ The Witch, but I plan to fix that soon (It’s currently streaming on Netflix). What I haven’t missed is most of Willem Defoe’s films and everything Robert Pattinson made when he wasn’t playing a vampire. If I only saw the what/what scene from The Lighthouse (it’s in the trailer below) , it would be enough to convince me to see this. So smoke a bowl out of a corncob pipe, put on your peacoat and pledge to speak in pirate vernacular or your best Popeye the Sailor voice. You’ll be all set, maties!
