I don't recall exactly how I was introduced to the books of Robert Beck, but I do remember that I was in high school. Bored to death in the suburbs and somewhere between reading Jack Kerouac's On The Road and Nelson Algren's Neon Wilderness, I found out about Pimp. His narrative didn't ask, but told this white boy to pay attention as he dolled out stories of the streets which I had never been exposed to in my life. I was as hooked as a teenage junkie hooker.
This documentary looks to spread the news about Iceberg Slim to the masses and this is a good thing. This movie is showing at the ever awesome Cinefamily in Los Angeles tomorrow. For extra credit, I highly recommend you getting your hands on the classic documentary American Pimp either before or after you see this.
